Professional Experience and Political Career:
  • Lawyer at the Office of Attorney of Emile Eddé
  • Elected Member of the Parliament for Mount Lebanon in 1934, re-elected in 1937, 1943, 1947, 1951, 1960, 1968 and 1972
  • Remained Deputy for all his life by virtue of the extension of Parliament's mandate
  • Appointed Minister of Finance in March 1938, in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Khaled Chehab
  • Appointed Minister of the Interior, Post and Telegraph in September 1943 in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Riyad El-Solh during the term of H.E. President Bechara El-Khoury
  • Appointed Minister of Finance in December 1946 in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Riyad El-Solh during the term of H.E. President Bechara El-Khoury
  • Appointed Minister of the Interior and Public Health in June 1947, also in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Riyad El-Solh during the term of H.E. President Bechara El-Khoury.
  • Held several ministerial positions including the positions of Minister of the Interior, of Post, Telegraph and Telephone, and of Water and Electricity Resources, in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Rasheed Karameh during the term of H.E. PresidentSuleiman Franjieh.
  • Held the position of Minister the Interior, Foreign Affairs, Lebanese Expatriates, and National Defense, in addition to that of Deputy Prime Minister following the redistribution of ministerial positions in September 1976
  • Appointed Minister of Finance, and of Housing and Cooperatives, in April 1984 in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Rasheed Karameh during the term of H.E. PresidentAmin Gemayel
  • Elected H.E. Presidentof the Republic on the 23rd of September 1952.
  • Founded and headed the National Liberal Party from 1958 till 1985.
  • Founded the Constitutional Party with Majeed Arslan, Hameed Franjieh, Michel Zakkour, Sabri Hamadeh, Saleem Takla and Bechara El- Khoury.
  • Served in 1944 as Lebanon's minister plenipotentiary to Great Britain and remained in that position for two years and a half
  • Chaired, between 1945 and 1946, the Lebanese delegation to the roundtable talks in London where the Palestine case was discussed
  • Represented Lebanon in 1948 at the United Nations in New York
  • Founded in 1968 a coalition called the "Tripartite Coalition", consisting of himself, the head of the National Coalition Party, Raymond Eddé, and the head of the Phalanges Party, Sheikh Pierre Gemayel
  • Headed the National Front, established in 1976
